This ghoulish looking creature is a hatchetfish. It is a laterally compressed deep sea fish resembling the blade of a hatchet. They are small, ranging from 2. 8 cm to 2.7 inches, and live in tropical, subtropical waters of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans.
